Sunrise Ford Pre-Race Report: Irwindale Speedway

Source By: LRM Sports Marketing, Inc.

The Sunrise Ford/ Turbo-Torq/High Point Distributing/Victory Circle Ford Fusion racing team will swing back into action this coming weekend at Irwindale Speedway. Fresh off their 5th place finish at Kyle, Texas in the Grand National division with rookie sensation Jason Bowles, the team, led by their car owner, Bob Bruncati, look to redeem themselves from the opening night problems that the Super Late Model team suffered at Irwindale Speedway on March 24, 2007.

The team with their driver, Rip Michels, had the field covered in the SLM division. They were the fastest in practice, set the fastest time in qualifying, and led the first 25 laps until a fifty cent bolt came lose, they ended up 27th. “We were really disappointed that we let that race get away,” said Rip Michels. “ I felt like Santa Clause, bolt checks were done on the car, we just missed one. That is what happens when the car is not fully prepared at the shop. We were at least a week behind on the car, and because of that lack of preparation, it cost us the win. All I can say is if the car was that good unprepared, we should be really good this weekend. I just hope that David Beat and Dan Moore keep my spot on the top of the points warm, cause we’re coming.”

“I could not be more ecstatic about the performance of both teams,” commented car Owner, Bob Bruncati. “Both teams have really worked their tails off. Jason and the West team did a fantastic Job in Kyle, Texas. And even though we had a hiccup at Irwindale on opening night in the SLM division, the car was extremely fast. I am not too worried about our opening night performance. Rip always seems to make it back up. Both of his Championships in 2002 and 2003 had Did Not Finishes (DNF) on the first night of competition. So we look forward to rebounding from the problems we encountered.”

“This has been a dream of mine for a long time, to have two competitive teams. I can not thank all the guys enough for their hard work and dedication, I look forward to a great season.”

You can catch Rip Michels and his Sunrise Ford Racing team at Irwindale Speedway this Saturday night.  Irwindale Speedway at 500 Speedway Drive off of Live Oak Ave. and the I-605 freeway, between the I-10 and 210 Foothill freeways in Irwindale, California.

“SUNRISE FORD TEAM’S UP WITH RIP MICHELS RACING, INC.”

There is an old adage that says “keep your friends close, and your competitors even closer.” Although that is not quite how the saying goes, that statement could never have been truer then with the partnership that was formed last month between Rip Michels Racing, Inc., and West Coast car owner, Bob Bruncati, owner of Sunrise Ford.

For two years (2002 -2003), while Rip competed at the famed half-mile track of Irwindale Speedway in the Super Late Model Division, his biggest competition came from Bob Bruncati and his Sunrise Ford Racing Team with their drivers James and Tony Bruncati. The competition was fierce on and off the track, with heated races, and even more heated conversations after the race.

Rip won back-to-back championships in 2002 and 2003 and he has credited his team’s success to the two-year battle and intense competition that was waged week in and week out with Bob and his team. “We had to step up our program every weekend, it really helped us to prepare for our move up to the Southwest Tour,” said Rip Michels. “Even though we were huge competitors, Bob was the first guy to buy my tires in my first start in the Southwest Tour back in 2003. So we have had a great deal of respect for each other.”

In 2004 Rip left Irwindale to compete in the now defunct NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Tour Division, where he would capture the 2004 Rookie of the Year award, and captured the series final championship in 2006, while Bob continued to race at Irwindale capturing his first NASCAR championship in 2005 with his driver Andrew Phipps.

In 2006 Bob moved his team up to run a limited schedule of races in the NASCAR Grand National Division in hopes of competing fulltime in the series in 2007. He was also looking to put together another team to compete in the Super Late Model Division at Irwindale Speedway for 2007, and was looking to partner up with a sponsor for that endeavor.

That sponsor was none other than Mr. Lee Ladd, and his new business venture Turbo Torq, Inc, a business in which Bob and Lee are partners. With the sponsor in place, Bob and Lee discussed potential drivers for the ride, and they both wanted Rip as their driver, and the deal was complete. Lee Ladd has been Rip’s car owner since 1997. Although he stepped back as car owner in 2005, he has remained a true friend to the team and is the reason Rip has won 7 championships since 1997. The deal also included Rip’s good friend and championship winning engine builder Brad Peters from FreightTrain Peters Racing Engines. The Sunrise Ford Racing team will be located out of Bob Bruncati’s shops in Fontana, California.

“I’m looking forward to going back to Irwindale Speedway to compete in the highly competitive SLM division with Bob,” said Rip. “Bob is a great owner, and it’s going to be a lot of fun for the crew and me to drive for him. It is cool to see an owner in the shop a couple hours of the day helping out the race team. Plus, he is so hands on that I can take a breath and just really concentrate on driving and set up. Which is something I have not been able to do in a long time.”

“I am really happy to be associated with Rip Michels,’ said Bob Bruncati. “He has been such a thorn in my side that you just have got to respect what he has accomplished. When Lee told me that he might be available, there was really no other choice. Rip and his entire team have been working their tails off building a new Victory Circle SLM chassis,

it’s going to be a bullet.”

“This really is a good fit all the way around,” said Lee Ladd. “Rip and his team have been the pinnacle for all the West Coast Racing teams. He has had such success in everything he has been in, and the team has been nothing but professionals and have represented their sponsors well.”

Along with Sunrise Ford and Turbo Torq, the Sunrise Ford racing team would like to give thanks to the follows sponsors for their product support:

Ron’s Rear Ends, DJ Safety, Wilwood Disc Brakes, Aurora Rod Ends, Red Line Oil, Quarter Master, Schroeder Torsion Bars, Ringers Gloves, Circle Racing Wheels, Hy-Lube Systems, Total Power Batteries, Oreme Brothers, BC Sportsimage, and Work of Art Johnson.

Stock Building Supply Race Report: Rocky Mountain Raceway

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Leeco Racing/ Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team capped off three straight weekends of racing by finishing 10th in the “Napa Auto Parts 125 & Salt Lake City Home Improvement Show Presented by Stock Building Supply,” at the Rocky Mountain Raceway located in Salt Lake City, Utah this past weekend.

This was the third annual visit to the great state of Utah for Rip and the team. The annual event is a way to thank all of the great support that the race team receives from the Stock Building Supply Associates and Vendors located in the Utah area.

The team’s first stop on their agenda was at three local Stock Building Supply stores in Orem, West Jordan, and Layton, Utah on Friday for the third annual barbeque and meet and greet. The barbecues and meet and greets have become a huge success. It is estimated that 2,000 Stock Associates, Vendors, Customers, and race fans attended all three locations.

The second part of the agenda for the team was to have a competitive racecar on Saturday. Rip and the team made two of the three practice sessions. He was 6th in practice session number two, and 7th in the final practices. Rip and the team were not happy with the car, and made major adjustments before qualifying.

Rip qualified 7th, but was almost a half a second slower then the pole speed. The team continued to make adjustments to the car, and was optimistic about their chances to be a repeat winner for this race. Rip would start in the 13th position due to the invert, and would line up on the 7th row inside. At the drop of the green flag, Rip immediately started his charge to the front. By lap four, he was in fourth, and by the 6th lap, he was in second.

Rip was content to ride in second as he and fellow AutoZone Northwest Tour competitor Zane Sharp distanced themselves from the rest of the field. On lap 114, a caution came out, setting up a ten-lap dash for the win. Rip felt that he had a shot at the win and was going to give it his all, as he said over the radio. Unfortunately, a mechanical gremlin developed on the restart, and the car did not come up to speed. Rip tried to get out of the way of the field, but contact was made and Rip was spun into the infield. Rip rejoined the field on the tail end and salvaged a tenth place finished.

“ I am a little disappointed about our finish for the 2,500 Stock Associates, Vendors, Employees and Fans that had come to support us,” said Rip  “But I am especially disappointed for my team, those guys changed everything but the number on the car. In the end, they gave me a great car that was capable of winning. Their hard work gave us a shot at the win.”

“ I want to personally thank Duff Wakefield, Fritz Froerer, Dan Buttars, Carl Truman, Matt Quarnberg, and all of the rest of the Stock Building Supply Associates for their kind hospitality that they showed to the team and myself. We really enjoy coming here to Utah, and always have a great time. With 5,000 people in the stands, a great response to the first annual Home Improvement show in Utah, this was a huge success for all involved,” commented Rip

Rip’s next event will be the season’s final race for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Division at Altamont Raceway on September 23, 2006. For more information about Rip Michels and his sponsors, please visit www.ripmichels.com

Stock Building Supply Pre-Race Report: RMR

As most of the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series Division teams prepare for their next race on September 23rd in Altamont, CA, Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Leeco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Mote Carlo racing team will be heading to the great state of Utah to compete in the “Rocky Mountain Challenge Series,” this coming Saturday at Rocky Mountain Raceway, located in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Rocky Mountain Challenge Series is a regional touring series that allows competitors to gain experience on different types of asphalt oval tracks up to 3/8 mile in length. It is a racing series that offers maximum opportunity at an affordable price serving the Intermountain West. The motto of the series is to “Race Hard and Have Fun!”

This will be the third time that Rip and the team have competed with this series. Their last visit in August of 2005 resulted in a win for Rip and the team. Rocky Mountain Raceway is a paved 3/8-mile track with 5 degrees of banking in the straights and a progressive banking of 7 to 11 degrees in the corners.

The Team:

“We are really excited about racing at Rocky Mountain Raceway,” said Tire Specialist, Michael Sprague. “For me, it is my homecoming, the place where I grew up.” All my family and childhood friends are here, and that is why it is one of my favorite places to race.”

The Drivers Corner:

“Out of all the tracks that I have competed at over the years, Rocky Mountain Raceway is one of my favorite tracks,” commented Rip. “It is a fast 3/8 mile track with lots of room to pass. For Stock Building Supply, the Utah market area is huge, it is also one of the regions that are the biggest supporters of our race team. So it is great to see our good friends Duff Wakefield, Fritz Froerer, and all of the associates at Stock Building Supply. This is a special event for all the customers, vendors, and employees of Stock in the Utah area. We only get to come out here once a year, so it is really nice to see the people who help give their support to our entire team.”

The Car: Destiny

This will be chassis Destiny’s second visit to Rocky Mountain Raceway. Its first visit resulted in a victory for Rip and the team. In its last 12 starts, it had11 top ten finishes. It raced last weekend in Colorado where it finished 4th.

Stock Building Supply Race Report: CNS

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Leeco Racing/ Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo Racing team headed to Colorado this past weekend to compete in the “United Power/Touchstone Energy 150” at the 3/8-mile Colorado National Speedway.

Fresh off their first career win, the team was looking to ride the momentum into this past weekend’s race. Chassis Destiny was quick in both practice sessions on Friday and Saturday. The team felt that they had a good car for qualifying, and they were not disappointed. Rip qualified fifth with a time of 16:346 around the quick 3/8-mile track.

A six was pulled for the invert, and Rip would find himself starting the race on the outside front row. At the drop of the green flag, Rip wasted no time and jumped into the lead. A caution on lap eight brought the field together once again.

Under the caution Rip reported that his car was really loose, and that he was not sure if he could maintain the pace to keep the lead. When the field resumed under green, Rip was passed by 9-time champion Steve Carlson for first place. The car was really loose on the outside lane and Rip was freight trained backed to the 7th position.

Rip battled his way back to the 4th position, where he would finish the night. “We’re a little disappointed in our run tonight,” said Rip. “We thought we had a better car than that. The car turned so well in qualifying, it just turned to well for the race. We were a little off on the chassis, but I am glad we were able to get back into the top five.”

Rip’s next race will be this coming weekend in the NAPA 125 & Salt Lake City Home Improvement Show, presented by Stock Building Supply.

Stock Building Supply Pre-Race Report: Colorado National Speedway

Fresh off their first career victory in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Tour Division, Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Leedco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team had very little time to celebrate.

With back to back races in Colorado and Utah, the team would have three days to prepare the cars before the hauler leaves on Wednesday night for the twenty hour trip to the great state of Colorado to compete in this coming weekend’s “United Power/Touchstone Energy 150” at the 3/8-mile Colorado National Speedway.

This race is the third annual “Face Off” between the drivers from the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series division, and the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Midwest Series division. It is expected to bring together 46 of the best short track race car drivers from the Midwest and Southwest regions. With 32 cars starting the race, qualifying will be critical. Rip has four starts at Colorado National Speedway, resulting in 19th, 18th, 8th, and 5th place finishes.

The Team:

“It has been a very exciting week for everyone on this team,” said crew chief John Schustze Jr. “To finally get our first victory in this very tough division, feels like a huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders. However, we still have to keep our focus as we head into this weekends race. We had a decent run here in June by finishing 5th, but the car was not as good as we would have liked for it to be. Hopefully we will have the car a little better so we can be in a position to race for the win.”

The Drivers Corner:

“We as a team always look forward to going to Colorado National Speedway,” said Rip. “The fans that attend at that track are some of the best and most enthusiastic crowds we get to compete in front of on this series. From a driver’s stand point it is a great racetrack with lots of room to pass. The races at the track are always exciting and we look forward to competing at this fast 3/8 mile track.”

The Car: Destiny

Chassis Destiny last raced at Stockton 99 Speedway on July 15, 2006, where it captured its second Bud Pole award and finished fourth in the race. In its last eleven races it has finished in the top ten 10 times.

Sponsor’s Corner:

A great deal of thanks goes out to Art & Lori Johnson of “Works of Art Johnson” for the awesome trophies they made for this past weekend’s race at Irwindale Speedway. Works of Art Johnson creates custom glass designs for commercial buildings, custom built homes, restaurants and individual customer needs. Stock Building Supply Race Report:  “Stock Building Supply 100 & Home Improvement Show”

For most of us who grew up around racing, we had a dream. Whether it was as a driver, crew chief, or crewmember, we had the dream of one day being victorious, and winning the big race. For Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Leeco Racing/ Victory Circle Chassis/ Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team, that dream came true this past Saturday at Irwindale Speedway in the “Stock Building Supply 100 & Home Improvement Show.”

Rip, who started his racing career 15 years ago at Saugus Speedway, watched his heroes like Ron Hornaday and Dan Press, win in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Tour Division, and that is where his dream began. He wanted to win in the same division as his heroes. The day started off on the right track. Rip was the fastest car in both practice sessions.

Rip qualified third and would start the race from the second row outside. At the drop of the green flag, Rip went three wide and was in a side-by-side battle for the lead with two-time champion Jim Petit. They battled for six laps in a hard fought battle, but by lap seven, Rip was in the lead and never looked back.

Rip captured his first career victory in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Tour

before 5,000 fans in the stands. Rip had fulfilled his dream, and gave a great deal of thanks to those who help him achieve his dream.

“There are so many people I want to thank. I know that I will never be able to express my appreciation to each and every one of them who have helped me to achieve all that I have in racing,” said Rip “First off, Stock Building Supply and all their marketing partners, James Hardie, Trus Joist, PrimeSource, and USP. What awesome sponsors, I am so thankful that we won on this night, having our sponsor, sponsor the race along with a very successful Home Improvement Show. With so many Stock associates, vendors, and employees in attendance, we really wanted to win this race, and to have accomplished that is just incredible.

“Next would be Lee Ladd, of Leeco (Formerly Ladco) who has helped me more than anyone knows, he has stuck by me for 8 years. Of course I need to give a shout out to Marc, Susan, and Les from Victory Circle Chassis for all their help, this includes former employee Craig Raudman, who was instrumental in our partnership.

“I also need to thank all of our Product Sponsors, John and Brad of Freighttrain Peters Racing Engines, Joel & Jonny Orme of Orme Brothers, Inc. Tim Sweet from Apache Rental Group, Mike Nakke, from Nakke Suspension Specialist. Also to one of my long time sponsors and close friends, Art and Lori Johnson of Work of Art Johnson, who made the beautiful trophies for the night’s event.

“Ron and Wendy from Ron’s Rear Ends, Bill of BC Sportsimages, Total Power, DJ Safety, Ringers, Willwood Brakes, Aurora Rod Ends, Schroeder Torsion Bars, Quarter Master, Hy-Lube, Hoosier Tires and Circle Racing wheels

“Last, but not least, I need to thank my wife and my entire crew for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to, as we call it, living the dream. That goes for everyone who ever helped me along the way to get to where I am now, I can never thank them enough.”

The team’s next race will be this coming weekend, August 19, 2006, at Colorado National Speedway to compete in the United Power/Touchstone Energy "150" in a special combination event with the Midwest Series.

Stock Building Supply Pre-Race Report:  “Stock building Supply 100 & Home Improvement Show”

Fresh off their third consecutive top five finish in the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Tour Division race at Stockton 99 Speedway, Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Leeco Racing/ Victory Circle Chassis/ Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team head for the comforts of home, Irwindale Speedway, to compete in the “Stock Building Supply 100 & Home Improvement Show.”

Irwindale Speedway, a track that has produced three championships for Rip and the team, along with 43 victories, 61 top fives in 98 starts, has proven to be a struggle for consistency in running the Elite tour car. This will be Rip’s seventh start at Irwindale Speedway in the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Tour Division. The results have been mixed, two top five’s, two top tens, and two finishes of 24th or worse.

“We have led a lot of laps here at Irwindale in the tour car, we just have not been able to close the deal,” said team owner Laurie Michels. “We are hoping to change that this coming weekend.”

The Team:

"Spectacular achievements come from unspectacular preparation." -- Roger Staubach

For thousands of race teams across the country, those words could not be truer.   Preparation in the shop is where races and championships are won and lost. For Rip Michels and the team, it has been one of the keys to the team’s success over the years.

“The guys in the shop have been really busy in preparation for this race,” said team manager, Michael Medlin. “The team has been making the finishing touches to a new car that will make its maiden voyage at this race. The car is immaculate, and shows just how dedicated this entire team is.”

The Driver’s Corner:

“What can I say about Irwindale? I love this place,” commented Rip Michels. “It is a fast half mile progressive banked track that is a lot of fun to race on. You can get three, sometimes four wide in the corners, which always leads to great racing. We had a great car back here in November for the Showdown, and we feel we have an even better car for this weekend’s race. The competition is always tough, but I don’t want to let another competitor win our sponsor’s race, so we plan on bringing our A game.”

The Car: Gidget

Last week the team sent out an e-mail to their sponsor and fans to have them vote for a name for chassis G. There were three names to vote on G-Money, Ginger, and Gumby. They could also write in a name for the car. The winner came from the write in votes. Rip has always had a love for the beach and surfing, and most of the fans that have followed Rip’s career voted for Gidget, and referred to Rip as Moon Doggie. The Gidget films were based on the popularity of the beach and surfer movements of the 60’s.  The whole team agreed, and Gidget will make her debut this weekend.

Sponsor’s Corner:

The entire team would like to give out a special thanks to Joel and Jonny Orme of Orme Brothers Inc., who have supplied the plumbing for all of Rip’s race cars since the first car Rip built back in the early 90’s. Orme Brother, Inc. has been in business since 1944 and is a leader in specialty hoses and fittings for the automoble industry.  For more information about Orme Brothers, Inc., and their products, please visit them at www.ormebrothers.com

Stock Building Supply Race Report: Stockton 99 Speedway

With temperatures well into the 100’s, the teams from the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Division series came together to compete in the “AutoZone 100” at the famous Stockton 99 Speedway located in Stockton, California.

For Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team, Stockton has been a thorn in their side. “We just have not had very good race cars here at this track,” said Boyd “Chip” Brown Jr. “Although we had two top ten finishes in four starts, including our team’s first top five in this division, we just never had a good balance on the car, and the car was never consistent. We were either to tight, or way, way to loose.”

The team knew that they needed to make the car more consistent for this race. Having a slim ten point lead in the championship, the goal was to make the car more competitive. So Rip and the team worked hard on the set up, and with help from Mike Naake of Naake Suspension Specialists, Rip and the team went with a very aggressive set up, far less conventional then they have tried before.

The result was a very fast racecar. Rip and the team unloaded the car for Friday’s practice session, and it was clear that the hard work of the team had paid off. Rip set the fastest lap in Friday’s practice session and was clocked in a lap time of 13.680, some three tenths quicker then Rip had ever run before at this track. The car was well balanced and very consistent.

On Saturday the team made some final adjustments to the car and felt very confident that they would have a good car for both qualifying and the race. The team was not disappointed as Rip set the fastest time in qualifying with a lap time of 13.691. The lap was good enough to capture Rip’s and the team’s second career Bud Pole.

Rip drew an eight for the inversion and would start the race in the eight position fourth row outside. At the drop of the green flag, Rip took a conservative approach to the race and ran in the seventh position for the first part of the race. With 25 laps to go Rip made his charge and got up to the fourth position where he would finish the night.

“The inverts have been a blessing and a curse for us, it seems that when we qualify around the tenth position, we get the invert to go our way. When we qualify really good the inversion goes against us,” commented Rip

“It is awful hard to pass cars on a ¼ mile track like Stockton, you have to be very careful not to get caught up in someone else’s wreck. I really wanted to be conservative, and it seems to have paid off. We had a good racecar, and I am pleased with our performance, I am just glad to have gotten out of there with the car in one piece.”

The fourth place finish gave Rip enough points to maintain his point lead in the Championships, but it drew the competition even closer. Rip has a five-point lead over Eddy McKean and a six-point lead over Eric Holmes.

The next race for the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Division series will be on August 12, 2006 for the second annual “Stock Building Supply 150 and Home Improvement Show” at Irwindale Speedway.

Stock Building Supply Pre-Race Report: Stockton 99

Celebrating its 59th and final year of competitive automobile racing, the famed and legendary Stockton 99 speedway located in Stockton, Ca. will play host to round number five of competition for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series Division.

For Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/ Victory Circle Chassis/ Chevrolet racing team, Stockton 99 Speedway has been an up and down track for the team. In four starts it has produced one top five and one top ten, it has also produced two finishes outside the top 15.

Rip and the entire team hope to continue their consistent runs that they have had this season, a season that has produced three top five’s and four top ten’s in four starts.

The Team:

The team has been busy putting the final touches on their new car, which will make its debut on August 12, 2006 for the “Stock Building Supply 150” and Home Improvement Show at Irwindale Speedway. “Chassis “G” has taken up quite a bit of our time, the team has really been putting in a lot of hours to get this car done, and to get chassis Destiny ready for this coming weekend, “ commented Car Chief, Roger Theabold.

The Drivers Corner:

“This is a track that has played havoc with us as far as the chassis set up is concerned,” said Rip. “It is really a tough track to get the car hooked up to the surface, we were tight one race, loose the other. It has been a track that we have struggled with to get the car to have an equal balance. The track is so tight that it leaves you very little room for mistakes. With turns one and two completely flat and three and four banked, you really have to be careful not to overdrive turns one and two, and under drive three and four. A driver has to maintain complete focus all the time. You seem like you are always in a corner.”

The Car: Destiny

Chassis Destiny makes its fifth start of the 2006 season. In its four previous starts, it has had three top tens, and one DNF (did not finish). In its last ten races it has a total of eight top ten finishes, including a string of six top ten finishes in a row.

The Road That Leads To The Showdown:

The Invitational Only Toyota All-Star Showdown is a race that brings together the Top Ten in points at season’s end from each of the four Elite divisions of NASCAR from across the country. The top 40 teams will compete against each other in a nationally televised race from Irwindale Speedway. In the chase for the exclusive invitational only race that will be held on October 21, 2006, Rip Michels currently sits in first place with a ten-point lead over second, and 16 over third.

The Race:

Look for the #12 Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis this coming weekend at the famous 1/4 mile Stockton 99 Speedway in Stockton, CA. The team will be competing in the15th annual “AutoZone 100,” racing begins at 5:30PM.

Rip Michels  Racing Update

The team had a very busy three days this past weekend with a test session at Irwindale speedway on Friday night, the team then headed at 10:00PM Friday night to Altamont, Ca., which is located 80 miles west of San Francisco, CA., to compete in the "Altamont Motorsports Park 150"

The team arrived on Saturday for the open practice session, since this was the first time that Rip and the team had competed at the speedway they brought a car with a very conservative set up. That set up would post the 2nd fastest time in Saturday's practice session.

On Sunday, the team felt that they had a good car, good enough to be at the very least a top five car. Rip again set the 2nd fastest time in Sunday's practice session and ended up qualifying the car in the 4th position. There was an 8-car invert of the field putting Rip in the 5th starting position. At the drop of the green flag Rip quickly moved up to the 2nd position where he ended the night.

The second place finish put Rip and the number 12 Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo into first place in the season Championship chase.

"I could not be more pleased with our results this weekend," commented Rip. "This was one of the tracks that we had concerns about since we had never competed here, for us to finish second is like a win for me and the team." Rip was asked how he likes the view from the top of the championship mountain, he stated, "It is to early to even think about a championship, I like our position, but we have 4 more races to compete in. I just want to continue to have consistent finishes like we have been doing all year long. If we can continue to do that, the points will come."

Rip and the team’s next race will be in Stockton, Ca on July 15, 2006

Stock Building Supply Pre-Race Report: Altamont Motorsports Park

With the dog days of summer in full swing, the boys from the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Division will return to action this weekend for the “Altamont Motorsports Park 150”. With temperatures expected to be in the 90’s, the racing action, along with this year’s series points race, it’s expected to get even hotter

Currently tied for second in the season points, 30 markers out of first, Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team will be making the inaugural trip to Altamont Motorsports Park.

It has been four years since the Elite Southwest series has visited the Altamont Motorsport Park facilities. The last time the series raced here, current point leader Eric Holmes was victorious.

The Team:

“The team has been hard at work in the shop in preparation for this event,” said Zane Ratliff, mechanic “Since we as a team have never competed here, we are going with a conservative set up. Hopefully we will have the car close enough for us to just make fine tuning adjustments.”

The Drivers Corner:

“Altamont Motorsport Park is a ½ mile track with 8 to 12 degrees of progressive banking in the turns, somewhat similar to our home track of Irwindale Speedway,” commented Rip Michels. “The track is a lot more narrow on the straightaway, so you have to be careful coming out of the corners. I was told there is a bump coming out of turn four and if your car is too high, it could launch you into the wall. So we need to be careful but I am looking forward to competing on this challenging racetrack. We want to continue to have consistent runs like we have had in the first three races. Since six of the drivers that are currently in the top ten have competed here, we really want to try and bring home a top ten finish.”

The Car: Destiny

Chassis Destiny makes its third start of 2006 season. This has resulted in two top tens, and one DNF (did not finish). In its last nine races it has a total of seven top ten finishes, including a string of six top ten finishes in a row.

In the chase for the exclusive invitational only race that will be held tentatively in October 21, 2006, Rip Michels currently sits tied for 2nd in the points, 30 points out of first.

The Race:

The “Altamont Motorsports Park 150” race at the Altamont Motorsports Park 1/2-mile oval is located in Altamont, California. Practice starts at 12:15PM with qualifying at 3:45PM. Stock Building Supply Racing: Colorado National Speedway Report

Consistence is what Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis/ Chevrolet were looking for this past weekend in the “Auto Trader 150” at Colorado National Speedway (CNS).

In the two previous races this season, Rip and the team had scored one top five, and one top ten. The team unloaded the car for Friday’s open practice session and knew from the first lap that they had a good car. “We concentrated mainly on our race set up,” said Crew Chief John Schuetze Jr. “We worked on the balance of the race car all day Friday and the car was really fast.”

The team was happy with the car as they posted fast enough lap times to place them within the top three cars. On Saturday, the team was still able to post times within the top five and Rip was happy with the way the car was performing.

As the team lined up for qualifying, they wanted to qualify in the top five to get a good starting position. Rip turned a lap of 16.295 good for 7th fastest in qualifying. The invert was 8 putting Rip on the outside front row for the race.

When the green flag dropped, Rip immediately went into the lead. Rip set a blistering pace but the lead was short lived as the car became tight in the middle of the turn. On lap 22 Rip fell to second and by lap 56, Rip was in fifth where he would finish the night.

“I was a little concerned because we were really loose in qualifying,” said Rip. “ We had not experienced a loose condition like that all weekend. So we tightened up the car for the race. Unfortunately, we went a little to far in our adjustment. I am still happy with our finish, we have two top five’s and three top ten’s in three races. So we have been consistent, and that is what we have been working on.”

Rip currently is tied for second 30 point out of the lead. The team’s next race will be at Altamont Speedway on July 2, 2006.

Stock Building Supply Pre-Race Report: Colorado National Speedway

Fresh off their sixth place finish at Shasta Raceway Park, Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team will be making the eleven hundred mile trip to the great state of Colorado to compete in this coming weekend’s “Auto Trader 150” at the 3/8-mile at Colorado National Speedway.

This race is the second annual  “Face Off” between the drivers from the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Series division, and the Nascar AutoZone Elite Midwest Series division. It is expected to bring together 46 of the best short track race car drivers from the Midwest and Southwest regions. With 32 cars starting the race, qualifying will be critical. Rip has three starts at Colorado National Speedway, resulting in a 19th, 18th, and 8th place finishes. Rip also captured his first career Bud Pole Award in August of 2005 by circling the 3/8-mile track with a lap time of 16.243.

The Team:

“The team is really pumped up about this race,” said mechanic Chris Lazalde. “We have always run well here, but we have also had our share of bad luck. This track has some of the best fans, the race is usually a sell out and the hospitality we are shown by the fans is awesome.”

The Drivers Corner:

“Colorado National Speedway is probably one of my favorite tracks that we compete on, even though it has been an up and down roller coaster ride for us competing at this track,” said Rip Michels. “It is a track that is similar to my home track, Irwindale Speedway, where we have had such great success.  Unfortunately, we have had a lot of bad luck here. My first race here we got into fluid on the track that put us in the fence while we were running second. We had mechanical problems the second time here. Our third trip here, we got our first Bud Pole. During the race we got into fluid on the track again, we fell back to 14th before we made our way back to an 8th place finish. We feel like we have a good shot at a win on this track, I know we are going to give it 100%.”

The Car: Destiny

Chassis Destiny is the workhorse for our race team. In its last eight races it has finished in the top ten seven times. It also captured the team’s first Bud Pole here at Colorado National Speedway back in August of 2005.

The Road That Leads To The Showdown:

Stock Building Supply Pre-Race Report: Shasta Raceway Park

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team will swing back into action this weekend to compete in the “NARI Records 125 presented by BECCA” at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, California.

This will be the second visit for Rip and the team at this track. Last year Rip lead a race high 84 laps in route to a second place finish. The team is looking to rebound after their disappointing 24th place finish at Meridian Speedway in Idaho, and feel that this is a track they can turn things around.  “We really had a great time at this track last year,” commented Tire Specialist, Michael Sprague. “We were really competitive and George Wade and his staff all made us feel more than welcome. They had an excellent Barbeque on Friday night and I hear that they are going to do even more for us this time around, I can’t wait.”

The Team:

“Before Meridian, we had 6 consecutive finishes in the top ten,” said Crew Chief, John Schuetze Jr. “After the race we drove all night and got back to the shop on Monday morning. We knew that this car had to be fixed for this race in Shasta. I’d like to thank the crew members, especially our body man, Boyd “Chip” Brown Jr., for all their hard work in getting the car race ready for this weekend.”

The Drivers Corner:

“This track is really fun to race, even though it is a short track, you can pass here,” said Rip Michels. “You have to have patience, and a lot of finesse at this track, and not overdrive the corners. It is a rough track with a couple of bumps that you have to position your car perfectly on so you will not upset the car. We had a great run last time we were here, and we look forward to competing on this track.”

The Car: Destiny

This car sustained heavy body damage two weeks ago. Every body part on the car minus the left front fender and left side door had to be replaced. This is the same car that finished second here last September at this race, and had a string of six top ten finishes.

Greetings,

I wanted to give you all a quick update on this past weekends race in Meridian, Idaho. Rip along with the entire team would like to thank David Smedley, the store manager for the Boise, Idaho store and his entire staff for their hospitality. The barbeque and meet and greet was a lot of fun for the crew, and David was a trooper as he was treated to a couple of very fast laps around the quarter mile track at the news conference.

On Saturday, the team qualified 10th for the event, but would have to wait until Sunday to race due to a storm that washed out racing for Saturday night. On Sunday, the team was looking for a strong run, unfortunately Rip was caught up in a second lap pile up and could not continue the race.

The team headed back to California, where the car is being repaired for the team’s next race, which will be on May 13, 2006 in Shasta, CA

Stock Building Supply Pre-Race Report:  “Stock Building Supply 150”

After a three month hiatus, Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team will swing back into action this Saturday night (April 29th) as they head to Meridian, Idaho to compete in the

“Stock Building Supply 150” at Meridian Speedway.

This race will be a series of firsts for both the race team, and their sponsor. This will be the first time that Rip and his team will compete in the Nascar AutoZone Elite Northwest Series Division, which is one of the four touring divisions that compete in the United States. It will also be the first time the team will compete at Meridian Speedway. The race will also be the first time that Stock Building Supply has sponsored a Nascar Race in the Northwestern United States.

“The Stock Building Supply150 at Meridian Speedway is our first sponsorship venture in the Northwest and we are quite excited about it,” states Rick Smith, Manager of Motorsports Operations for Stock Building Supply.  “We are very committed to the touring division, and we will be sponsoring events in Boise, Irwindale, Salt Lake City and Albuquerque this year.  These events are all in good markets for our company and have a great fan base.  The touring late models are exciting cars to watch and have some of the closest racing action anywhere,” states Smith.

“The team is really pumped up about going to Idaho to help promote our sponsor in its first race in the Northwest,” said car owner, Laurie Michels. “This is a great opportunity for us to meet all the Stock Building Supply associates that we would not be able to race in front of since we compete in the Southwest Tour Series. We have had a lot of fun competing in other divisions throughout the Western United States, including Utah, Colorado, and a new venue in New Mexico, which we will be competing in a Late Model Race in September.”

The Team:

The team has been hard at work building a new racecar. Chassis G is tentatively scheduled to make its debut on August 12th at Irwindale Speedway. “We have been really busy at the shop and at the track,” said shop foreman, Boyd “Chip” Brown Jr. “We have also been assisting Irwindale Speedway’s Super Late Model driver Dan Moore with his program, which has resulted in two top five finishes in three races. We have been staying busy.”

 The Driver’s Corner:

“Being that this is my first visit to Meridian Speedway, I have had to enlist the help of my fellow Southwest Tour competitor, Eddy Mckean, and David Minegar from the Rocky Mountain Challenge Series for information about the track,” said Rip Michels. “What I do know is that it is a ¼ mile bullring with both corners virtually flat with no banking. So the emphasis for us is to get the car to roll through the center of the corner, pivot the car and get good bite off the corners. From the sound of it, this is a one-groove racetrack, with very little room to pass. We really want to qualify well so that we may be able to have a shot at the win. I am really looking forward to competing in our first Northwest Tour Event. There are a ton of great drivers who have come down and run with us in the Southwest Series, so it will be cool to compete with them on a track that is on their home turf.”

The Car: Destiny

Chassis Destiny last raced in November of 2005 at Phoenix International Raceway where it finished 7th. It has finished in the top ten six straight times, including one win at Rocky Mountain Raceway in Salt Lake City, Utah. This Victory Circle Elite Chassis was built in 2004 and has competed in all but four of the races last season.

 Sponsor’s Corner:

This week’s highlighted sponsor is Trus Joist.

Stock Building Supply Race Report: Copper World Classic

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/ Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo headed to Phoenix International Raceway located in Avondale, Arizona to compete in the “Copper World Classic 100” this past Sunday. This was the seasons opening race for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Tour Series.

On Saturday, the team unloaded the car for the first of two practices sessions. Rip set the 18th fastest time during practices number one with a lap of 28.813. The team made adjustments to the car, and posted the 10th fastest time in practice number two with a lap of 28.374. As qualifying inspection approached, the team did not feel confident in the chassis set up they had on the car. They made several front-end geometry changes that they felt would help the balance of the car.

The team would have to wait until Sunday morning to find out if they went in the right direction with the adjustments.

On Sunday morning, with temperatures in the 20’s at the track, Rip would have to go out 10th in the qualifying order. The track, as well as the crews, were extremely cold, Rip was able to put his Stock Building Supply Chevrolet in 7th on the starting grid with a lap time of 27.729. Rip would start the race forth row inside. At the drop of the green flag, Rip, made his way to the fifth position. Rip and NASCAR AutoZone Elite Midwest Driver standout, Tim Shendel, put on a battle for the fifth position. When the checkered flag fell, Rip cross the line in the fifth position.

“We were pleased with our performance today,” said Rip. “The car was a top five car all day. We were just a little to tight to pass Mr. Shendel. A top five is a great way to start off the season, considering last year we finished 42nd here.”

“As a car owner, I could not be more pleased with the guys on the crew,” said Car Owner, Laurie Michels. “When you add new crew members as we did this year, it usually takes some time for the guys to get use to the system we have of doing things. The guys all got along great and really help each other. I really want to thank all of them for their commitment and desire to help this race team.”

Stock Building Supply Race Report: All Star Showdown

Fresh off their 7th place finish at the seasons final race for the AutoZone Elite Southwest Division at Phoenix International Raceway, Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team headed to Irwindale Speedway located in Irwindale, California to compete in the invitational only Nascar Toyota All Star Showdown.

The All Star Showdown brings together 40 of the best drivers from across the country to compete at Irwindale Speedway. The 40 drivers all represent the top ten in points from each of the four Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest, Northwest, Mid-West, and Southeast divisions.

For Rip Michels, Irwindale Speedway has been his own personal playground. Rip is the all time win leader at Irwindale Speedway. Rip’s numbers are impressive since the track opened in 1999. Rip has had 93 starts with 41 victories and 56 top 5’s. He finished second to Eric Holmes last year in the All Star Showdown and felt that they had an even better car this year.

The team arrived at Irwindale at 2:00AM on Friday morning from Phoenix International Raceway. Nine hours later, they set the fastest lap time in practices with an 18.000. The car was fast and the team felt confident that they would have a shot at the win.

The team lined up in the 6th starting position for the 2nd of two qualifying races on Friday night. Rip took the lead on lap three and never looked back. The win not only gave him his 42nd victory at the track, it guaranteed him a front row starting position for Saturday nights race.

Saturday’s race would be run in two segments, the first segment would be 75 laps, then a 10-minute break. The second segment would be a 50 lap run to the checkered flag. Rip started on the outside of the front row and at the drop of the green flag, immediately took command of the race. Rip led all 75 laps of the first segment. The team made minor adjustments on the car during the 10-minute break for the final 50-lap sprint to the finish.

As the race went back to green, Rip lost the lead at the start and fell back into second place. He was content to ride there until the last 10 laps. Unfortunately, a yellow flag came out just 15 laps into the 50 laps segment. On the restart Rip and a fellow competitor raced hard down into turn one, contact was made and Rip spun out.

Rip was in the 31st position with 35 laps to go. Rip put on a great show for the fans as he raced, four and sometimes five wide to make it back up to the 6th position, where he finished the race.

“We really had an awesome car tonight,” said Rip. “It was too bad that we had the contact on lap 90, I felt that without that contact, we are winning this race. But that is how it sometimes works, when you have 40 of the best short track drivers in the country competing. It is easy for two drivers to be battling for the same spot. It has been a great year for us, although we had three DNF (did not finish) including a 42nd finish to start the season. We, as a team, got better as the year progressed and we got the cars more competitive as the year went on. With four straight top ten finishes to end the season, we feel like we are going to be a factor in next year’s championship.”

Rip Michels and his entire team would like to thank all of their sponsors for giving them the opportunity to do what they love most, and that is to race. Thank you to Rick Smith and all of the associates from Stock Building Supply, Lee Ladd, from LADCO Racing, and Les and Sue Denherder from Victory Circle Chassis.

They would also like to pass on a special thanks to all of their associates sponsors, Redline Oil, Wildwood Brakes, Ringers Gloves, Orme Brothers, Quarter Master, Circle Racing Wheels, Aurua Bearings, BC Sportsimages, Johnson Oil Pumps, DJ Safety, Schroeder Torsion Bars, Ron's Rear Ends, Apache Rental Group, and Proline Pit Carts.

Stock Building Supply Pre-Race Report: Phoenix International Raceway

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team will be heading east to the state of Arizona this Thursday November 10, 2004, to compete in the “Arizona Lottery 125” at Phoenix International Raceway, in Phoenix, Arizona.

This will be the final race of the season for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series Division, and will set the field for those teams that finish in the top ten in the season long point battle to compete in the 3rd annual Nascar Toyota All Star Showdown.

The Nascar Toyota All Star Showdown brings together the top ten drivers from each of the four AutoZone Elite touring divisions across the country to compete head to head against each other. Rip only needs to finish 35th or better to lock in his invitation to the All Star Event.

The Team:

“This week is Nascar’s version of hell week for the teams of the southwest division,” said shop foreman Boyd “Chip” Brown Jr. “If we can accomplish our goal of finishing in the top ten, we will then drive all night Thursday back to Irwindale, California to race in the All Star Event. We will practice and run our qualifying race on Friday night, then race for the big buck on Saturday. So three days of racing in two states should make for a real interesting week.”

The Drivers Corner:

“Phoenix is probably one of the coolest tracks that we get to race on,” said Rip Michels. “It has two unique turns, turn one is banked with a sharp turn radius, turns three and four have very little banking, but is really fast. The front straight is narrow and the back straight has a dogleg in it. It is a challenging track for the drivers, with very little room for mistakes. We want to redeem our last run here in January where we finished 42nd. The car was really fast, but we got caught up in a lap one crash. So we are hoping for much better results.”

The Car: Destiny

Chassis Destiny is coming off its second straight top five finish, with its third place finish at Mesa Marin. Its last visit to Phoenix was in last year’s race on October 3, 2004 where it finished 8th. This Victory Circle Elite Chassis was built in 2004 and has competed in all but three of the races this season.

The Road That Leads To The Showdown:

The Invitational Only Toyota All-Star Showdown is a race that brings together the Top Ten in points at season’s end, from each of the four Elite divisions of NASCAR from across the country. The top 40 teams will compete against each other in a nationally televised race from Irwindale Speedway, in the chase for the exclusive invitational only race that will be held on November 10, 2005 at Irwindale Speedway. Rip Michels currently sits 9th in the points, 371 points behind first, and 127 points in front of 11th.

The Race:

The “Arizona Lottery 125” at Phoenix International Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona, is a 1-mile super speedway with turns one and two banked 11 degrees, turns three and four banked nine degrees and two degrees of banking in the dogleg.

The “Arizona Lottery 125” is scheduled to start at 4:00PM. For more information about tickets or the track, please call (661) 366-5711.

Stock Building Supply Race Report: Mesa Marin

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/ Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo headed to Bakersfield, California this past Saturday night to compete in the “Star Nursery.Com 300” at Mesa Marin Raceway. This was race thirteen of fourteen for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series.

The team arrived in Bakersfield, California on Thursday evening to enjoy the 28th and final October Classic race at Mesa Marin. For 28 years Mesa has held this 3-day event, which included Super Late Models on Thursday night, Late Models on Friday night, and the big show, the Elite and Grand National divisions, on Saturday night. The team was treated to a great Super Late Model race, and afterwards, got to camp out in the Mesa Marin parking lot with a multitude of fans and other competitors.

On Friday, the team unloaded the car for an open test session, and from the moment they put the car on the track, they knew they had a fast ride. Rip set the fastest time during the open practices with an 18.363. He then backed that up on Saturday by posting the fastest time again in practices, with a lap of 18.309. As qualifying approached, the team felt confident that they had a shot at the pole. Rip ended up qualifying third, but told the team the car was much better than his lap of 18.239.

Rip would start the race second row inside. At the drop of the green flag, Rip, knowing that this was a 300-lap event, played it conservative for the first half of the race. He settled in for the long haul and stayed in the top ten most of the night. As pit stops approached, the teams stuck to their game plan, and with 50 laps to go, were riding in third. Rip thought he had the best strategy as he had the freshest tires of any of the competitors, but a late race call on an adjustment to the car, made the car too loose to make a charge at the lead. Rip ended up finishing in third for his second straight top 5 finished.

“We had an awesome race car this evening,” said Rip. “The team did a great job of preparing this car for the race and it showed. We stuck to our game plan and it resulted in us having an excellent finish.  We felt like we had the car to beat, we just went a little to far in our last adjustment, but the way our season has been, we will gladly take third.”

Rip’s next event will be race number 14 for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Division at the mile track of Phoenix International Raceway on November 10, 2005 located in Phoenix, AZ.

Saying Goodbye to a piece of West Coast History

To all of us that grew up here in Southern California, we have been blessed with some of the finest short tracks in all of racing. From Irwindale Speedway, and Perris Auto Speedway, to the now closed Ascot Raceway Park, Saugus Speedway, Riverside and Ontario Speedways, all victims of the Southern California’s real estate progress, the list of closed tracks will add one more this coming Saturday night. Mesa Marin Raceway will close its facility at the end of Saturday night’s events after 28 years of racing.

For this writer, this comes as one of the saddest days in my life. I grew up watching races at Ascot, and Saugus. Then I went to Mesa Marin, which I considered to be the west coast version of Bristol, Tennessee. Granted it did not have the banking as Bristol, but coming from a flat track like Saugus, it sure felt like Bristol.

As the California Real Estate market has boomed, Mesa Marin has fallen victim to that progress, and all of us in racing will be deeply sadden with its closure. Although more tracks are being built in unincorporated areas of the state, you hate to see the great tracks like Mesa close. So this Saturday will be a time to say good-bye to another piece of West Coast racing history. As the teams prepare for what will be one of the biggest nights of racing, with over 40 cars buying for 30 spots, everyone wants to win this race. They want to be known as the last person to win at Mesa Marin.

For Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team, the 1997 Mesa Marin Modified Champion wants that trophy.

The Team:

“The team has been working really hard since our last race at Shasta Raceway Park,” said Car Chief, Roger Theabold. “We have been practicing pits stops and preparing the car for what will be one of the biggest events of the year. We, as a team, know how much this race means to all of us, but especially Rip. He has had great success at this track and we want to put Rip in Victory Lane.”

The Drivers Corner:

“Mesa has meant so much to me,” commented Rip Michels. “I won my first championship in 1997 at this track. Coming from Saugus to Mesa as a driver was like going from the poor house to the penthouse. The track is just awesome, you can race two wide with no problem and it is a really fast half-mile track. I hope to pull my Stock Building Supply Chevrolet into victory lane one last time at this great track.”

The Car: Destiny

This car is coming off its best performance of the season with its strong second place showing at Shasta Raceway Park. The car, since its debut, has had 8 starts with three top fives, four top tens, and four top 15’s.

“The car has really been responding to the shock package that Roger, Rip and myself have come up with,“ said Crew Chief John Shutez, Jr. “We really feel that we are going in the right direction with this shock package as the last two races the car has performed its best.”

Rip Michels currently sits 9th in the points, 424 points behind first, and 122 points in front of 11th.

The Race:

The “Star Nursery.com 300” at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, California will be race number 13 of 14 for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series Division. The fastest half-mile on the west coast has 17 degrees of banking in the corners, and 7 degrees on both front and back straights.

The “Star Nursery.com 300” is located in Bakersfield, California. The race is scheduled to start at 6:00PM. For more information about tickets or the track, please call (661) 366-5711.

Shasta Raceway Park

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/ Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo headed to Northern California this past Saturday night to compete in the “Shasta 125” at Shasta Raceway Park. This was race twelve of fourteen for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series.

The team arrived in Anderson, California late Friday afternoon. As most of the teams were finishing up their open practice session, the teams were treated to a barbeque that was hosted by George Wade and the staff of Shasta Raceway Park. The barbeque brought together all of the drivers, owners, crews, family, and friends for a great night of conversation and food.

On Saturday, the team arrived at the racetrack with a great deal of excitement and concern. Most of the teams were able to test their cars on Friday, but due to a scheduling conflict, the Stock Building Supply Racing team would have to head into Saturday’s practice session, with zero laps on the track.  Since this was the first visit for the team, they were concern as to what to expect from both the track and the car.

The team had consistently placed the car in the top ten during the two practice sessions. Rip and the team decided to make some changes right before qualifying as they felt it would help the car in the race. Rip then posted the 8th fastest lap in qualifying with a lap of 15.646.  The team then received some good fortune when the invert for the race was an 8, putting Rip on the pole for the race.

At the drop of the green flag, Rip took the lead and had built up a 10 car lengths lead. Around lap 50 Rip had noticed that he was loosing front brakes, which was causing the car to get loose going into the turns. Unfortunately, the team miscalculated the amount of brakes that the small 3/8 mile would require.

On lap 84 with the brake situation becoming more of an issue, Rip could no longer hold the bottom of the track and subsequently gave up the number one position. Rip dropped to third in the running order. On lap 114, a caution had come out, with the brakes cooled and 6 laps to go, Rip was able to get back to 2nd position, where he would finish the night.

“We are really pleased with the finish,” said Rip. “The team made a couple of front spring and sway bar changes, and the car really came alive. I felt like we had a shot at the win. We as a team just made the wrong choice in the size of the breaking system that we used. We simply did not think that we would use that much brake here, and that cost us. This is such a hard sport to win at. Things are always changing on you. It’s like you get one piece of the puzzle figured out, then another problem settles itself in. In this case, we really made gains on our chassis set up, only to make the wrong decision on our brakes. As they say, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. I can promise you this, our team will not make that mistake again. With the help of Jeff and the great people at Willwood Disc Brakes, we will have more than enough brakes at Mesa Marin.”

Rip’s next event will be race number 13 for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Division at the famed Mesa Marin Raceway on October 15, 2005 located in Bakersfield, California. This will be the last race and final event at the legendary West Coast track.  Opened in April of 1977, the track will close as the final checkered flag falls on the night’s event.

Next Stop Shasta 125

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team will be heading to Northern California this weekend to compete in the “Shasta 125” at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, California. This will be race number 12 of 14 for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series Division.

The last time the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Division visited Shasta Raceway Park was back in 1989. The legendary West Coast Driver, Dan Press, won the race. Dan Press happens to be one of Rip’s biggest heroes when he was growing up. On the current list of drivers who compete full time in the series today, there has only been one driver who has competed at this facility. That is 11th place competitor, and ironman of the division, Bob Lyons, who will be making his 284-career start in the Southwest Series. Mr. Lyons has been competing in the series since 1987.

Since no one in the top ten has competed at Shasta Raceway Park in this division, it could be anyone’s race. Mixed that in with local driver and other series competitors, the field of 28 scheduled drivers should be in for a real exciting night of racing.

The Team:

“The entire team is really excited about this weekend’s race,” said Team Owner, Laurie Michels. “The team is really pumped up after their victory two weekends ago at Rocky Mountain Raceway in Salt Lake City, Utah. We felt like we hit on a set up that could take us to our first victory.”

The Drivers Corner:

“Since this will be my first visit to Shasta Raceway Park, we really went with a very conservative chassis set up on the car,” said Rip. “What I have been told from other racers who have competed at the track is that it is a tight 3/8 mile oval, similar to the now defunct El Cajon Speedway in San Diego, California. I know that if we can get the car to work like it did at Rocky Mountain Raceway, we will have a great shot at getting a good finish.”

The Car: Destiny

This car was built in 2004 from the great people at Victory Circle Chassis. It has had 5 starts this year with finishes of 11th, 7th, 12th, 16th and a 1st place finish at Rocky Mountain Raceway.

The Road That Leads To The Showdown:

The Invitational Only Toyota All-Star Showdown is a race that brings together the Top Ten in points at season’s end, from each of the four Elite divisions of NASCAR from across the country.                                         Rocky Mountain Raceway

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/ Ladco Racing/ Victory Circle Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team headed to Utah this past weekend to compete in the Rocky Mountain Challenge Series “Napa Auto Parts 125,” at the famed Rocky Mountain Speedway in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This was a special appearance for the team as a way of thanking all the stores and associates from the Utah area for their support of the race team. On Friday, Rip and his wife Laurie were at the Stock Building Supply Store in Orem, Utah. While Team Manager, Michael Medlin and the rest of the team went to the Stock Building Supply Store in West Jordan, Utah for a Barbeque and meet and greet.

With over 500 Employees, Associates, Contractors, and Customers at each store. Both Rip and the team were simply blown away by the amount of people who showed up at each of the store’s locations. They did their best to answer all of the questions that were fielded to them, and they came away with new fans and most importantly, new friends.

With the team well fed, they had to get back to work and the task at hand, which was to win the race. Rip’s last visit to Utah for Stock ended up in a first lap crash, which damaged the car so badly that they had to ride around at the back of the pack. The team really wanted to redeem themselves.

The car was really fast right off the truck with Rip posting the fastest times in two of the three practices. When it was time to qualify, the team felt confident that they would be able to set fast time for the event. Unfortunately, the new tires were quite different from the tires the team practiced on and Rip nearly collected the fence on both of his qualifying laps. Rip qualified 16th.

The team immediately went to work on the car, they changed a few things in the front end and hoped for the best during the race. With over 2,000 people in attendance from Stock Building Supply, the team was quite nervous about the outcome of the race. Rip started the race in the 5th position due to the 20-car invert. At the drop of the green flag, Rip from his fifth starting position immediately got to second on lap one, and by lap two was in the lead. Rip never looked back and captured his first career victory at Rocky Mountain Raceway.

“This was a huge win for us as a team,” said Rip. “We had so many people in attendance from Stock, I wanted to make sure we did not have a repeat of last year. I want to thank Duff Wakefield and all of his associates from the stores in Utah. They are a huge part of this race team and I am so glad to be associated with them.”

Rip and the team’s next race will be race number 12 for the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Series race at Shasta Raceway Park, in Anderson, Ca. on September 10, 2005.

I wish the NASCAR Elite division would compete here, it would be a great race. We are also really excited about seeing are good friend Duff Wakefield, and all of his associates at Stock Building Supply. This is a special event for all the customers, vendors, and employees of Stock in the Utah area. Stock Building Supply Race Report: Irwindale Speedway

Here is the race report for race number eleven for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series. Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/ Victory Circle Chevrolet headed to their home track of Irwindale Speedway this past Saturday night to compete in the Stock Building Supply 150 & Home Improvement Show.

The team was eager to compete at Irwindale Speedway. The last visit to the track was on July 9, 2005 in the Super Late Model Division where Rip captured his 40th and 41st career victories at the track where he has the most wins of any driver. The July 9th race kicked off a string of five straight races for the team, with the fifth one back at Irwindale this past weekend.

This was a huge weekend for the team, not only was their sponsor, Stock Building Supply sponsoring the race, they would also host a spectacular home improvement show featuring displays from many of the nation’s largest manufacturers and distributors of the top brand name power tools, windows, doors, decking, siding, fasteners, connectors, paint, and more, from several of the vendors that are associates of Stock Building Supply.

As the team unloaded the car, they had high hopes for a very successful day, but as the first practice came, the team was dealt a series of set backs that would plague the team all day. In the first practices session, Rip had lost traction on the front end of the car and made contact with the wall. The team quickly sprung into action and made the necessary repairs to the car to prepare for the second practice session.

The team got back on the track and set the fastest practice time in the second session, but a vibration in the front end of the car made both driver and crew nervous. Not wanting to take a chance with the car or their fellow competitors, the team replaced all of the components on the right front of the car.  Barely getting out in time for qualifying, Rip set the 2nd fastest qualifying time with a lap of 17.862.

The invert, like last weekend, was a 10. Rip would have to start 9th on the field, fifth row inside. At the drop of the green flag, Rip immediately went for his patent move at Irwindale Speedway, on the bottom.  Rip was engaged in one of the fiercest battles all year, as everybody from fifth on back were battling for position, cars were sometimes three and four wide. On lap 12 two cars made contact and spun in front of Rip, but he made a great save from getting caught up in the wreck. When Rip emerged from the smoke, he had the fifth position.

The team was pumped up, as both Rip and the car were doing fine as the yellow flag flew. On lap 20 the green flag flew, but Rip had a problem, the vibration that had plagued the team during practices had returned, Rip dropped back to the 8th position, as the vibration got worse. On lap 66 the vibration had gotten so bad that Rip parked the car, finishing a disappointing 21st

“We, as a team are really disappointed right now,” said Rip “Racing can be a cruel sport, but if you have been a part of racing as long as we have, you get used to the fact that things happen that are out of your control. You always have to look for the positive, the car was fast, and we felt we had a shot at the win. More importantly for us, was the fact that the race and Home Improvement Show was a great success. During the meet and greets that we had all day, everybody had stated that they had a great time and the vendors were all very pleased with the turnout.”

The team’s next race will be in Salt Lake City, Utah at Rocky Mountain Raceway on August 28, 2005. This race is part of the team promotional tour for Stock Building Supply as they visit the Stock Building Supply Associates from the Utah area.

Stock Building Supply Southwest Series 150 & Home Improvement Show

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet racing team will be heading home this Saturday night to compete in the “Stock Building Supply Southwest Series 150 and Home Improvement Show” at Irwindale Speedway. This will be race number 11 for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Division.

This race will cap off 5 straight weeks of races in a row for the team. They have spent the last two weeks in the great state of Colorado, and are really excited to be coming home. “We are really excited to be home,” said Team Manager Michael Medlin. “Since all of our guys have full time jobs, these past two weeks have been a logistical nightmare for everybody. I know that some of our guys have not seen their homes or their own beds in weeks, so it in nice to be home. I know that the guys on the team are really excited about this coming weekend’s race. Since our great sponsor, Stock Building Supply, is sponsoring the race, the team has extra motivation for picking up its first career win in this very competitive series.”

The Team:

“All of the guys on this team have giving all that they can give these past 5 weeks,” said Crew Chief John Schuetze. “Tempers have been short, but we have all persevered. I know that I am glad to see that our home track of Irwindale is the last race of our 5 straight races. This race is a huge deal for our sponsor, Stock building Supply, and us. The team left Colorado on Saturday night immediately after the race to get back to California to prepare for this race. The team drove 20 straight hours to get home, that is what I call dedication.”

The Drivers Corner:

Rip is the all time win leader at Irwindale Speedway with 41 victories. His last visit to Irwindale was on July 9, 2005 in the Super Late Model Division, where Rip captured his 40th and 41st victories.

“This coming weekend’s race may be one of the most important races I have ever had,” said Rip. “With our sponsor Stock building Supply sponsoring the race, not to mention all the hard work the Director of Motorsports Operations, Rick Smith and his associates have done to bring this unique Home Improvement Show to Irwindale Speedway. I know that the guys on the team have given all they can to be successful in this race. So I want to make sure I give all I can as a driver. Stock Building Supply is a great sponsor and has done so much for not only this team, but for the Nascar AutoZone Elite Division series. Not only do they sponsor a race, but they also give to all the fans by putting together an awesome Home Improvement show.

Stock Building Supply Race Report: CNS

Here is the race report for race number ten for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series. With half the team staying in Colorado and with the disappointment still lingering from their 29th place finish at Pikes Peak, the team received an unexpected invitation from fellow competitor MK Kanke and his car owners, Dan and Kathy Nikolai. The invitation was the use of the team’s shop, and an invite to a beautiful campground located just above Colorado Springs.

The team would work on the racecar during the day and then head to the campgrounds for a night under the stars. The team was allowed to do some fishing in a private pond and all the team members were very successful in catching their limits of fish.

With the team rejuvenated from their week of camping and working on the car, the team was eager to get back to work. On Friday, the team started the day off at the Stock Building Supply store #603 located in Denver, Colorado for a barbecue sponsored by the Stock Building Supply vendor, James Hardie Sliding Products. The crew had a meet and greet with the store’s associates, contractors, and fans. The turn out for the barbecue was fantastic, and the team would like to extend a great deal of thanks to Randy and Jenny for their kind hospitality.

The team then headed to Erie, Colorado, home of Colorado National Speedway. As the team unloaded the racecar, they were reminded that their last visit to Colorado National Speedway in June resulted in a Did Not Finish (DNF) because a mechanical failure. With the problems that the team had experienced at Pikes Peak, the team had great concern. They wanted to make sure that they had fixed the problem in the fuel system that had plagued them all day at Pikes.

The team rolled onto the track and the car was really fast, setting the fastest time of the day. The team had been successful in fixing the fuel problem. The team felt confident that they would have a strong run. The team had two practice sessions on Saturday. Rip was fastest in both practices session. Rip then backed that up by capturing his first Bud Pole of his short career on the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Division with a lap of 16.243

The team was really pumped up, they knew they had a fast racecar. Rip pulled a ten for the invert, which put the tenth fastest qualifier on the pole. Rip would start tenth in the race on the outside of row number five. At the drop of the green flag, Rip avoided getting caught up in an accident at the start of the race. He dropped to the 15th position had started to make his way back up through the field. He worked his way up to the 6th position by lap 75.  Rip was content to ride in the 6th position until lap 125. Rip started to make his charge when he thought he had a right rear tire going down.

He was getting ready to come into the pits when he was told to stay out by his spotter, and Team Manager, Michael Medlin. He knew that a caution flag was going to come out due to a spinning car. That call saved Rip and the team from losing laps on the track. Rip did not have a flat tire, a car had oiled the track down and Rip had been losing traction because of the oil. Rip had dropped backed to the 11th place position with seven laps to go and made it back up to eight where he finished the night.

“We are really pleased with our performance tonight,” said Rip. “We felt we had a top three car but circumstances just did not fall our way. On the bright side of things we gained one position in the points and the car is in one piece.”

The team will now head to Irwindale Speedway located in Irwindale, California, for the Stock Building Supply Southwest Series 150 & Home Improvement Show. Rip is the all time win leader at the track with 41 victories. The Home Improvement Show starts at 4:00PM.

Stock Building Supply Race Report: Pikes Peak

Here is a quick update on race number nine for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series. The team headed to Colorado with high, but realistic goals for the race. This was Rip's first visit to Pikes Peak International Raceway. The team's goals were to qualify in the top twenty and finish in the top ten.

As the team headed towards Colorado, they stopped by the new store in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a barbecue and a meet and greet with the store’s associates, contractors, and fans. Rip and the team had a great time talking with the many fans, employees, and contractors that were in attendance. The team would like to extend their gratitude to Operations Manager, George Harley and his staff for an awesome turnout.

The team then headed to Pueblo, Colorado for a barbecue on Thursday at the Stock Building Supply store in Pueblo West, Co. The turnout was awesome, with an estimated crowd of over 300 people. Rip and the team signed autographs and answered as many questions as they could. The team would to thank Operations Manager, James Harding and his staff for the great time.

With the team fully fed and relaxed, it was time to get to business. Rip and the team arrived at Pikes Peak on Friday morning. The team had two practice sessions, and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly Rip adapted to the track. He was 14th in the first practice session with a time of 28.824. He backed that up by placing 15th in the second session with a time of 28.717.

The team felt confident that they would be able to qualify in the top twenty. Rip surprised everyone with his 8th place run in his qualifying effort with a time of 27.741, almost a second faster than what he had practiced. The team was really excited as they felt they had the car that could compete for a top ten. At the drop of the green flag, Rip was content to ride in 8th place and educate himself with the track for his inaugural race at Pikes Peak.

With five laps in the race, the teams excitement turned to disappointment, as a carburetor problem plagued the team all day resulting in a 29th place finish 8 laps down. "We were really disappointed as a team,” said Rip. "The Car was really fast before the carburetor problems. I was driving around the track full throttle and going nowhere fast. We are not sure what the problem is, but we will find the problem and fix it."

With the next race at Colorado National Speedway in Erie Colorado this coming Saturday, half the team stayed in Colorado as guest of fellow competitor MK Kanke, and team owner Dan and Kathy Nikolai. The entire team would like to thank Dan and Kathy for their kind hospitality and great friendship, not to mention that great fishing spot.

The team’s next appearance will be at the Stock Building Supply store #603, in Denver, Co this coming Friday July 29, 2005 at 10:00AM. The address for the store is 1355 West 52nd Avenue Denver, Co. 80221.

The team will then head to Colorado National Speedway in Erie, Colorado. Racing begins at 5:00PM. For more information about Rip Michels and his sponsors, please visit www.ripmichels.com

A driver has to maintain complete focus all the time, you seem like you are always in a corner.”

The “Ripper” Goes Two For Two

Source By: LRM Sports Marketing, Inc.

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/ LADCO Racing/ Victory Circle Chevrolet racing team had no intention of running this past Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway.

In fact, most of the team members were scheduled to take the weekend off before they embarked on four straight weekends of racing.

That all changed when the telephone rang on Tuesday of last week. On the other line was Rick Smith, Director of Motorsports Operations for Stock Building Supply. Rick wanted the team to run the highly competitive Super Late Model Division to help promote the August 6, 2005 Stock Building Supply 150 and Home Improvement Show at Irwindale Speedway.

The car had been sitting in the corner of the shop since its last trip to Irwindale in March with a cover on it. Roger Theoabald had just refreshed the motor with help from M & R Machine. The team put the motor in on Wednesday night.

The results, two main event victories, bringing Rip’s all time win record to 41 victories in 5 years of racing at Irwindale Speedway.

“These two victories are really special to me,” said Rip Michels. “Not only did we surpass the 40 victory mark, these two wins were the last Super Late Model races we will run at Irwindale in our car. We, as a team, had decided to sell the Super Late Model car so that we could concentrate exclusively on the NASCAR Elite Southwest Division races. We plan on running several races for our sponsor back east and felt that we would not be able to race the car anymore.”

Chassis Electra has had a most impressive history. It has raced 5 times since 2004 and has had 4 victories, including three in a row this year.

“I am really proud and impressed with this team,” said Rick Smith. “This team is always willing to put forth all their efforts for us as a sponsor. When I called them to race this past weekend, they jumped right in and got it done. Rip having captured 41 victories at Irwindale is equally impressive. He and the team are to be congratulated.”

Rip’s next race will be this weekend at Stockton 99 Speedway in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division. For more information on Rip Michels and his sponsors, please visit www.ripmichels.com

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/ Victory Circle Chassis/ Chevrolet racing team will be competing in the highly competitive Super Late Model Division at Irwindale Speedway this Saturday night. This race was added to the team’s schedule to help promote the August 6th Stock Building Supply Home Improvement Show at Irwindale Speedway, in which the team will be participating in race number 11 for the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Division.

This will be Rip’s second start of the season in the Super Late Model division at Irwindale Speedway. Rip captured the series Championship titles in  2002 and 2003. Rip’s first start was on opening night, where Rip dominated the field to capture his 39th career victory at Irwindale Speedway.

The Team:

“This race will be the first of five weeks of consecutive races for the team,” said Team Owner Laurie Michels. “The team will race at Irwindale in the Super Late Model Division this weekend. We then have four races in a row for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Division, which will take us to Stockton, CA., Fountain, Co., Erie, Co., and then back to Irwindale Speedway for the Stock Building Supply Home Improvement Show on August 6th.”

The Drivers Corner:

Rip’s last start at Irwindale was on June 18th in the Nascar Autozone Elite Southwest Division where he finished third. “Irwindale is such a technical track, it is a super fast ½ mile progressive banked track,” said Rip. “You really have to hit your marks to be fast here. Although there is a lot of room to go three wide, if you run the top groove, there is very little room for mistakes. It is a very challenging track.”

The Car: Electra

The car was built in 2004 off the Victory Circle jig, it had two starts in 2004, with finishes of 9th place and one victory. It last raced on Opening night of this year, where it recorded its second straight victory. Chassis Electra is looking to go for the three-peat.

                                                                                                               June 30,2005

  Hello Everybody,

Here is the racing update for race number 7 of the 2005 AutoZone Elite Southwest Division season. Rip and the crew headed to the beautiful hills of Sonoma, Ca to compete in the Blue Lizard Australian Suncream 200 at the 1.949 road coast at Infineon Raceway. This is the second trip to Infineon Raceway for Rip and the team, and Rip's second time ever competing on a road course. Last year Rip finished 10th in his inaugural visit to the track.

Rip was 26th fastest in the morning practice, and qualified 18th on the field of 47 cars. At the drop of the green flag, Rip immediately started picking up positions, moving into the 10th by lap 20. Rip then pitted on laps 22 and 29 relegating him back to the 28th position. Rip started making his way back up through the field to the 10th position. With five laps to go Rip was in a spirited battle with David Gilland, Stan Silva, Jim Inglebright, and Nextel Cup stars, Kyle Bush and Travis Kvapil for the 8th position. On the last corner of the last lap, Gilland taped the car of Kyle Bush sending him pinning off the corner. Rip went high to avoid the spinning car of Bush and crossed the line in the 13th position.

"We are really happy with our performance today," said Rip. "Last year we came here just to learn and get the best finished we could. This time, we were really able to race. I really like this track"

"Rip did an awesome job today, this being only his second time on a road course he raced like a season veteran." said Team Manager, Michael Medlin. "The crew did an awesome job on the pits stop and it kept us running with the lead pack all day"

The team's next race will be at the famous Stockton 99 Speedway located in Stockton, California on July 15th. Rip and the Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chevrolet remained 10th in the points. They are now 251 points out of first with 7 races to go.

STOCK Building Supply Race Report # 6: Irwindale Speedway

Source By: LRM Sports Marketing, Inc.

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/ Ladco Racing / Victory Circle Chevrolet captured its first top five of the season at race number six of the 2005 AutoZone Elite Southwest Division race this past Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway.

The car was extremely fast and Rip set the fastest practices times in both Friday and Saturday’s practice sessions. Rip ran a 17.81 on Friday night, and then backed it up with an 18.339 in the first practice session on Saturday, then ran an 18.110 in the second session.

“We really thought we had a good shot for the pole,” said Rip. “We were really fast but the car was a bit on the free side so we tightened the car up for qualifying and we went a little to far in the adjustment and ended up qualifying 6th fastest at a 17.968”

The inversion on the field was drawn and the 8th fastest qualifier, Jim Petit, was on the pole. Rip lined up on the second row inside on the starting grid. When the Green flag dropped, Rip made his patented move on the bottom to grab the lead by lap 2. Rip held the lead for the next 80 laps.

“The car started to get loose around lap 70. On lap 80 I got to high in turns three and four and the car got into the marbles, which made the car feel like it had a rear tire going flat. Both the 03 and the 70 were able to get by me, it took a couple of laps before the car was back up to speed. We were content to finish third at that point,” commented Rip.

On lap 98, a caution flag flew which bunched up the field for a green, white, checkered finish. With the tires cooled down, Rip had two laps to try and get his first victory. When the green flag fell, 2004 National Champion, and good friend, Greg Pursley, dove his car to the bottom of Jim Petit. Rip stayed up in the high line in a three-way battle for the lead. In what was the closest finish of the year, the three multiple championship drivers

The “Ripper” Goes For 40 wins at IS

Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis team will be competing this Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway in the AutoZone Elite Southwest Division race.

Rip is the all time win leader at Irwindale with 39 victories. He also has the most championships of any driver with three titles in two different divisions. Rip’s last visit to Irwindale Speedway was on March 12, 2005 where he captured his 39th career victory in the ultra competitive Super Late Model Division.

Points of Interest:

The Team:

“We are looking forward to getting back to Irwindale,” said Crew Chief John Schuetz Jr. “We are putting our famous “Jenna” chassis set up in the car, and from the testing we did about three weeks ago, we think she is going to be a threat to win. The “Jenna” set up was developed during our three years running the Super Late Model division at Irwindale. It captured 19 victories and two championships, so it is a good chance that we might be able to bring home our first victory in the AutoZone Elite Division here at the place that Rip has had so much success.”

“ It will be nice to see all of our family, friends, fans, and most important our Stock Building Supply associates. With all of the traveling that we do on the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Division tour, it will be nice to be home,” commented Michael Sprague, tire specialist.

                                  Colorado National Speedway

        Hello to all,

Here is the racing update for race number 5 of the 2005 AutoZone Elite Southwest Division season. The crew took the long 20+ hour trip to Denver, CO. with high hopes. The team felt that they had hit on a set up for the car that would put them in contention to win its first race. Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans.  The race was to take place on Saturday, but a full day of rain resulted in the race being cancelled until Sunday.
The team unloaded the car on Sunday and was the third fastest car in the morning practices. The team then was dealt a major set back when a mechanical parts failure, eliminated Rip and the team from the competition. "We were really looking forward to this race," said Rip. We ran second here last year and had a tire problem that resulted in us finishing 18th. We were looking forward to redeeming ourselves with a solid performance. The part failure ended all of our hopes. It was a very long, quiet, trip home." commented Rip.
The team's next race will be at Irwindale Speedway located in Irwindale, California on June 18, 2005. Rip and the Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chevrolet remained 13th in the points. They are now 236 points out of first.

With five starts under its belt, the car has put up some impressive numbers, 1 top five, and 3 top tens. “We have had great success with this chassis. It is one of the new Victory Circle Elite chassis, and it has been a great car for us,” said Rip Michels.

Look for the #12 Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis this coming weekend at Mesa Marin Raceway, in Bakersfield, CA. Racing begins at 6:00PM.

“Stockton 99 Speedway, The West Coast’s Lady in Black”

As one of the oldest raceways in the Western United States, Stockton 99 Speedway located in Stockton, California, is celebrating its 58th year of racing.

This legendary quarter mile track is considered to be one of the toughest tracks in the United States. Just like Darlington located in South Carolina, it has an extremely difficult layout, with turns one and two completely flat, and three and four banked at 14 degrees. It makes driving around this track one of the most challenging experiences that a driver will face.

“You can be sure that teams will be adding extra support to their fenders and doors on the right side of the car for protection from hitting the walls coming out of the corners, which is a certainty at Stockton,” said Rip Michels, driver of the No. 12 Stock Building Supply/LADCO Racing/Victory Circle Chevrolet.

Rip and the team will be competing this Saturday night at the legendary Stockton 99 Speedway in the NASCAR AutoZone Southwest Elite Division Series race. Last year Rip scored his first top five in his inaugural visit to Stockton by finishing four

“This is a tough old track. You have to use a lot of finesse getting into turns one and two, while you can drive the car in really deep in turns three and four. You have to race the track, if you don’t, the track will come out and bite you. I think it is one of the coolest tracks I have every seen, let alone raced on. When I think of the great drivers like Ernie Irvan and the late Ivan Baldwin who came from this track, it is just really neat to race here,” commented Rip.

Rip currently sits 18th in points, 180 out of first place. The team’s fourth race of the season will be at Mesa Marin Raceway, located in Bakersfield, California on May 14, 2005.
